MARSHFIELD, Mass.- Senior Lauren Clements (Garrison, Texas) and junior Elisabeth Schaffer (Benton, Pa.) of the Eastern Nazarene College softball team picked up New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) weekly honors, announced by the league office Monday. Clements was named the NECC Player of the Week while Schaffer collected NECC Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Clements notched a team-high eight base hits, including a pair of homers, as the Lions opened the 2019 season with five wins and one loss. She registered five RBIs and crossed the dish three times on the week.
In the squad's first game of the spring, Clements went 3-for-3 from the plate with one RBI as Eastern Nazarene blanked Rose-Hulman 8-0. She blasted a solo home run in the Lions' victories over Neumann and Saint Mary's (Minn.). Clements landed a pair of base knocks and scored a run in a 10-3 win over Monmouth (Ill.) while also adding a hit against Muhlenberg and delivering the game-winning RBI against Bates.
Schaffer started three games in the pitcher's circle and also made one relief appearance on the week. She racked up 38 strikeouts while surrendering just 11 hits and four walks. Schaffer compiled a 4-0 record with three complete games and just three earned runs.
In Eastern Nazarene's season-opening win over Rose-Hulman, Schaffer spun a five-inning complete game with 10 strikeouts and just two hits allowed. She fanned 14 batters and scattered three hits to help the Lions blank Saint Mary's (Minn.).
Schaffer recorded 11 strikeouts and hurled her third complete game of the spring as Eastern Nazarene bested Monmouth (Ill.) 10-3. She made her first relief appearance in the Lions' 5-4 win over Bates, tossing 1.2 innings and striking out three.
Eastern Nazarene sports a 5-1 overall record and resumes play in the Sunshine State March 5 against Rensselaer and Roanoke.
